Myths on dieting…
Enough is Enough!!!
Les McGregor

Well, let me start by saying “There is no such thing as healthy & quick weight loss.” Or should I say “There is no magic pill or quick scheme to maintain healthy weight loss.”

Over the course of the upcoming issues, we will try and help you decipher between Myth and Facts on dieting, and healthy ways to lose weight and keep it off.

Myth
Low-Fat or No-Fat diets are good for you

Truth
The perception given to us through magazine articles and television ads is to think that in order to lose weight; you need to have a strictly low/no fat diet. In actuality, the body needs fat for energy, transporting vitamins throughout the body, and aids in tissue repair. It is suggested that you maintain an eating regimen consisting of one third of your caloric intake coming from fat.

Today there are thousands of programs to choose from when trying to find the right eating plan to help you lose weight. So many, in fact, that it gets frustrating to try all the latest “fad” diets to only get a temporary loss of weight (if any).
Not only was it temporary weight loss, but somehow the weight came back and brought some extra weight with it. Has this happened to you?

This does not, by any means, suggest going out and continuing to eat whatever type of fats or fast foods you want. It is simply stating, by cutting down on saturated fats and consuming more unsaturated fats found in things like olive oil and avocados would be more beneficial to your body and your health.

Here are some simple rules to follow when selecting and maintaining a healthy eating plan:

- Avoid foods that are high in calories and
have a high fat content

- Choose to eat a combination of 4-6 small meals/snacks daily

- Always have fresh fruits and low fat alternatives available for snacking

- Avoid foods that have a high sugar content
