HEALTH AND EXERCISE

What’s Your Excuse?
By Mary Ann Lubas

“I don’t have time to exercise.”
This is one of the most popular excuses. Isn’t it funny how we have no time to exercise, but we always have time to watch our favorite tv show? You need to make exercise a priority. If you’re healthy, your life, family, and job are also healthy, so a healthy lifestyle should be your number one goal.

Your schedule is crazy but even a half hour of exercise three times a week is beneficial. It doesn’t matter when in the day you do it, as long as you schedule it in. If you’re really crunched for time, remember that you can split your workout into chunks throughout the day.

“Joining a gym is too expensive.”
Now a days you can get a gym membership for as little as $15 a month. Just think about it, it would cost you less than a dollar a day and it would save you money, time, and suffering by preventing illnesses in the long term.
If that is still not in your budget, forget the gym and workout at home. Use your creativity to find cheap ways to exercise. You can always go for a brisk walk or a jog outside. Expensive equipment is not necessary to workout. Do pushups, squats, and sit ups in your living room or get an exercise video from the library. Elastic bands are great for resistance and you can exercise with them anywhere.
“It’s the weekend.”
You eat healthy all week but become a weekend binger, scarfing down everything in sight. Stop! It’s ok to treat yourself but keep it sensible. Instead of eating a whole box of cookies, treat yourself to a small gourmet ice cream cone. Or have a glass of wine at dinner and not the whole bottle. You’ll get your reward for a week of eating healthy, but you will feel satisfied with less and won’t sabotage all your efforts.

What’s causing you to ignore your diet and miss your workouts?
Do you have a valid explanation or just one flimsy excuse after another?
As a personal trainer, I have heard every excuse in the book. This article is to bust those excuses and get you back on track to working out and eating healthy!

“I skipped breakfast, so I can go to town on potato chips.”
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Skipping it is setting you up to overeat later on in the day. This means you will probably end up eating more calories than you would if you had eaten a good breakfast. When you eat a healthy breakfast, your body feels nourished and satisfied, making you less likely to overeat and crave junk food the rest of the day.

“I’m too tired.”
Once you drag yourself into the gym or go for a jog, you usually feel a million times better. Exercise is the best battery charger for the body. Whatever gets your heart up and moving is what will be getting your energy levels up. Expend energy, and you’ll feel more energetic.
If you feel too tired to workout after work, get up earlier and exercise in the morning. You will get it out of the way before your hectic day and also feel more energetic.
Also, get enough sleep! This one is pretty self-explanatory.

“I’m sick of my workout routine.”
You’re stuck in a rut and bored with the same exercises you have been doing. Then make changes! Foe example, if you only workout with machines, try using some free weights at the gym. Ask the staff or someone to show you how to do certain exercises. If you normally ride an exercise bike for your cardio, switch to another cardio machine like the stair master. Your body will respond well to periodic changes in a workout routine, and you’ll likely get better results.
